English Riviera

Have you travelled to the English Riviera ? The place is located in South Devon and stretches for 22 miles along its gorgeous coastline, furthermore, it is a place containing many wonderful scenic towns and villages such asTorquay, Paignton and Brixham.

The area gained a reputation for being a place of relaxation and convalescence during the Napoleonic wars. During this time many families and naval personnel used the area and enjoyed the romantic and relaxing atmosphere of the surrounding bays.

The phrase ‘English Riviera’ was invented by the Victorians due to its similarities to the French equivalent.  The resort is still very influenced by the Mediterranean and has many sub tropical plants and palm trees growing throughout it.  Because of its location there are many different beaches and coastal towns for you to visit and explore within the English Riviera.

The English Riviera was designated a UNESCO global Geopark in 2007. This award is given to areas around the world that are full of natural beauty; global Geoparks are situated in many different locations in the world such as Brazil, Austria and Italy. One thing that is very special about the English Riviera and its Geopark status is that it is the world’s first urban geopark. There are three information centres located throughout the resort that contain information regarding areas of interest within the Geopark.

Torquay has a very historic harbour and seafront that has delighted holiday makers for many years. The town has many places of interests and attractions scattered through it including a coastal zoo and the historic Torre Abbey. The abbey has recently been restored at the cost of almost 6.5 million pounds and has over 800 years worth of history inside. Not only does the abbey contain one of the largest art collections in the West Country but is also set within its own fascinating and historic gardens.

Paignton, with its sandy beaches and pier has been a tourist hotspot for many years.  Green parklands cover the seafront and regularly host festivals and regattas throughout the summer. A great day out is never complete without a visit to Paignton Zoo. The zoo contains thousands of endangered animals and plants for visitors to see and has been listed as one of the top European days out by several national newspapers.
